Copy That Sounds Like You, But Converts Better with Samantha Burmeister

Writing copy that actually converts doesn’t mean sounding like a sales robot. It means showing up authentically while understanding the psychology behind what makes people buy.

Sam Burmeister, founder of Nomad Copy Agency, knows this better than most, and her journey proves why sales experience matters more than fancy words.

Why Sales Background Beats Templates Every Time

Sam didn’t set out to become a copywriter. After years leading sales teams and consistently ranking as a top performer, she left corporate in 2019 to travel full-time. What started as a side gig writing for her travel blog turned into something bigger when people kept asking her to write for them. When the pandemic hit and businesses scrambled to move online, Sam’s sales background became her secret advantage.

Throughout her journey, she learned that the foundation of good copy is understanding sales psychology: what motivates people to buy, what creates urgency, and what builds trust. The problem? Most people reach for templates or AI instead of asking what their audience really needs.

Sam’s approach is refreshingly simple. Insert one-question surveys throughout the customer journey. On landing pages, after purchases, and in follow-up emails. Over time, these responses become a goldmine of insights from people who actually pay you money, not just casual browsers filling out surveys.

Be the Guide, Not the Hero

Once you understand what your customers need to hear, the next challenge is how to say it. The biggest mistake sellers make is positioning themselves as the hero of the story. Because the truth is, your customer is the hero, and you’re the guide.

That perspective changes everything. Instead of “I did this, now you should buy,” it becomes “You’re facing this challenge. Here’s the transformation waiting for you.” In this sense, the story then focuses on what happens after, not on the act of buying. And that’s where personality comes in.

As Sam puts it, the idea is to ditch the manipulation tactics. No fake “RE:” subject lines or false payment alerts. We’re in what she calls a “trust recession”, where people are still spending money, but only with people they trust. So show your face, share a client win, or post a behind-the-scenes moment. You don’t need heavily designed graphics or Canva Pro. Just be real, be consistent, and let people see you’re human.

What About AI?

AI keeps coming up in conversations about copywriting, and Sam’s stance is measured. Yes, it can help. But you need to understand what good copy looks like before AI becomes useful. Think of it like a calculator. You have to know what to input to get valuable results.

AI tends to create disjointed content that lacks personality. It loves formulaic words like “actually” and “finally” and takes readers on confusing journeys that don’t land anywhere meaningful. Sam uses it for her own business tasks like transcribing, but never for client work. Sometimes it’s honestly faster to just write it yourself than to fight with AI trying to make it sound human.

Quality copy shows up in how people connect with your content and whether they actually buy from you. That’s the only metric that matters.

When Professional Help Makes Sense

Not everyone needs to hire a copywriter right away. Sam’s advice is to wait until you have proof of concept. You’re already making sales, but your conversion rates need work. If people aren’t buying yet, the issue probably isn’t the copy. It might be your product, your pricing, or your market fit.

For those not ready to invest in full services, there are middle-ground options. Sam’s Copy on Demand lets you write your own copy but get professional feedback. That or lean on the templates your direct sales company provides, since they’ve already tested their copy on thousands of sellers. And if you’re just getting started with list building, Sam’s free Opt-In Copy Bot helps you create opt-in pages without overthinking it.

At the end of the day, your copy should sound like you, just with a clearer path to the sale. Understanding your customers, being their guide instead of the hero, and showing up consistently as a real human builds more trust than any perfectly polished template ever could.
