How to Lead With Energy and Real Connection with Megan Kuiper

There’s a version of success that looks great on the outside but feels hollow on the inside. Megan Kuiper, executive coach, culture consultant, and keynote speaker, knows that version well and has spent the last two-plus years helping leaders trade it in for something better.

From Corporate Director to Life She Actually Loves

Megan spent 21.5 years as a corporate director before stepping away to build her own coaching and consulting practice. More than just a career move, that pivot was a deliberate choice to make a bigger impact, model something meaningful for her kids, and stop living life in silos where work, family, and self were three separate, competing things.

That integrated approach is the foundation of everything she teaches now.

The Energy You Bring Is a Choice

Most people drift through their days reacting to whatever hits them next. Megan’s take is that energy is something you choose and generate, starting from the moment your feet hit the floor.

She’s a big believer in what she calls pit stops: small, intentional resets scattered throughout the day that keep your energy from bottoming out before you get to the people who matter. A quick walk, a song you love, a fresh coat of lipstick. None of it needs to be a big production. It just needs to be intentional.

The alternative, she knows firsthand, is burnout. For years, she gave everything she had for 10 to 12 hours a day, walked in the door depleted, and eventually hit a wall that came with panic attacks and a creeping sense of emptiness despite every outward marker of success.

Connection Happens in the Margins

The second pillar of Megan’s work is something deceptively simple: the ‘Two seconds longer’ technique. Two extra seconds in a hug when your kid walks in from school. Holding a door a beat longer for a stranger. Closing the laptop and silencing your phone before a conversation so the person in front of you actually feels it.

When she started practicing this with her husband, he told her they were becoming “so romantic.” The secret was just two seconds of genuine presence.

It’s a reminder that connection requires more intention with the time already there.

Dreaming Is a Skill You Have to Practice

For most adults, dreaming stopped somewhere around age 10. Life got practical, schedules got full, and the big questions got quietly shelved.

Megan helps people find their way back. One of her clients couldn’t get clear on her dreams until she watched her child blow out birthday candles and remembered what she used to wish for herself. It turned out the dream was still there. It had just collected dust.

Her recommendation? Carve out quiet time on the calendar with no input, no podcasts, and no music. Just space to think. Ask yourself what you love, what you’re good at, and where there’s a real need for it. That intersection is usually where the dream lives.

What Happens When You Actually Go for It

One of Megan’s favorite examples involves a young operational executive who thought dreaming was “very woo” until he admitted he wanted to join a pickleball league. She encouraged him to go for it.

What followed surprised even him. He started empowering his team more, his results improved while he worked fewer hours, and his personal life flourished. His wife later emailed Megan to thank her for “bringing him home to me.” He’s since talked about that season on a podcast as one of the most important lessons he wishes he’d learned right out of college.

The pickleball league wasn’t the point. Permission to want a full life was.

Recognition That Actually Means Something

In direct sales, recognition is baked into the culture. The ribbons, the sashes, the stage moments. But the most powerful recognition Megan has seen goes much deeper than that.

For client retreats, she reaches out to spouses, kids, and family members ahead of time and collects videos or handwritten letters celebrating the person being honored. One group asked to recreate the experience a second year. Another had team members bring their family in just to show them the letter that had been living on the refrigerator.

That’s the kind of culture people don’t leave.

The Question Worth Asking Every Morning

Megan closes with a challenge that’s easy to carry into any day: ask yourself what standard you’re bringing to today. Not as a pressure tactic, but as an ignition. She shoots for an 11 out of 10. Not because every day delivers that, but because asking the question changes how she shows up for it.
