The Burnout No One Talks About with Ashley McDonald

Running a business while managing everything else in life can feel like a never-ending performance. From the outside, it looks like you’re crushing it. But on the inside? You’re running on fumes, your mind never shuts off, and there’s always this nagging feeling that you’re just one breakthrough away from finally feeling at peace.

Ashley McDonald, a therapist and nervous system first business mentor, calls this high-functioning burnout, and it’s more common than you think.

What High-Functioning Burnout Actually Looks Like

Unlike traditional burnout where you can’t get out of bed, high-functioning burnout is invisible to everyone else. You’re still showing up, still getting things done, and still appearing successful. But internally, you’re always “on.” Your brain races constantly.

Ashley explains that the real marker is living in perpetual “if only” or “when I” thinking. If only you had a bigger kitchen. When you hit that next income milestone. The current moment always feels just short of creating the contentment you’re chasing. It’s a constant state of “never enough.”

The Value Misalignment That Fuels the Fire

Most people experiencing high-functioning burnout claim to value things like presence, rest, or beauty. But when you look at how they actually live, their true values show up as perfectionism, busyness, or constant availability.

Ashley suggests taking a 30,000-foot view of your life to see whether what you’re doing is actually sustainable. If your current pace can’t be maintained long-term without breaking down, that’s the signal.

Recognizing When You’re Beyond Capacity

The signs are there if you’re willing to listen. How often do you push back emotions and tell yourself, “It’ll get easier next week”? How many times do you override that internal voice, saying “This is too much”?

When you consistently ignore these signals, you start to lose touch with your intuition. That motivation you used to feel in your business fades because you’ve taught yourself not to trust your own instincts.

The Somatic Wealth Framework

Ashley introduced her three-step process for dealing with overwhelm: regulate, reflect, rewire. First, regulate by getting out of your head and into your body. Take a breath of fresh air, lie down, or hug your dog. Second, reflect with self-compassion. Of course, you’re overwhelmed, look at everything on your plate. Third, rewire by asking “what’s really true?” Will your business actually fall apart if you don’t respond to that message in the next five minutes?

Pair this with micro moments of stillness throughout your day. Not a 30-minute meditation practice added to your packed schedule. Literally just 10 seconds of taking a breath or going for a walk without earbuds in. These tiny recalibrations teach your nervous system that you don’t need constant stimulation.

Stop Adding, Start Subtracting

The biggest trap? Thinking you need to add more to fix the problem. Feeling burnt out, so you add a meditation practice. Feeling exhausted, so you add tracking your food and walking 10,000 steps.

Ashley emphasizes that high-achieving women are exceptional at adding but struggle with subtracting. Before you add anything new to your life, ask what you can take away first. Replace, and don’t just pile on. You’re human, not a robot.

Meeting Your Inner Child

At the core of high-functioning burnout is often a childhood wound that taught you your worth was tied to your productivity and availability. Ashley shared a touching moment with her seven-year-old daughter, reminding her, “I’m just a girl” who sometimes doesn’t know what she’s doing.

That same truth applies to every woman building a business. There’s an inner child inside you desperate for belonging and love who’s been suppressed in the pursuit of success. Maybe all that needs to happen is a little reconciliation between who you are now and that version of you who just wanted to be seen and valued for existing, not for performing.
