Canva Made Simple: Design Tips Every Direct Seller Needs with Kat Cornell

Canva can help you create everything from social media graphics to presentations and website visuals. But it’s easy to get overwhelmed or spend more time designing than actually running your business. In this episode of the Modern Direct Seller Podcast, Becky chats with Kat Cornell of The Creative Cat Studio about using Canva more confidently, simplifying designs, and making content creation easier.

Start With Templates and Keep It Simple

You don’t have to start with a blank page every time you create something. Kat recommends using templates for inspiration, combining elements you like, and making the design your own.

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is trying to fit too much into one graphic. Too many fonts, colors, and words can make your message harder to follow. Keep your design simple, give important elements room to breathe, and use your caption to explain the details.

Canva Is More Than Social Media Graphics

Canva can also help you create team training materials, product lookbooks, event flyers, presentations, videos, website banners, blog covers, and email headers.

Think about the content you’re already creating and how you can reuse it across different platforms. Consistent colors, fonts, and visuals help your business feel more cohesive without requiring you to start from scratch each time.

Learn the Features That Save You Time

Kat recommends starting with a few useful Canva features:

  • Templates and favorites: Find inspiration and save the elements you want to use again.
  • Position and alignment: Organize design layers and keep everything lined up.
  • Brand kits: Store your brand colors and fonts so you can apply them more easily to new designs.

She also highlights Canva’s multi-page designs, which let you keep different formats together in one file rather than managing separate files for every platform.

Use AI as a Starting Point

AI can help you get ideas out of your head and create a first version of a design. But that doesn’t mean the first result is ready to publish.

Kat recommends bringing the design into Canva, refining it, and removing unnecessary elements. The goal is to make the design fit your style and communicate clearly, rather than including everything at once.

Give Your Existing Content a Second Look

Want to improve your Canva skills this week? Kat suggests opening an existing design and switching to Grid View. Seeing your work from a broader perspective can help you spot clutter, inconsistent alignment, or colors that don’t work well together.

Sometimes, removing one element or adjusting a font is all you need to make a design clearer.

You don’t have to master every Canva feature to create better content. Start with templates, keep your designs simple, and build a workflow that gives you more time to focus on your business.
